GTAP Course 3x3 aggregation SSAEURW Originally developed for the African Short Course in Global Trade Analysis January 25-31, 1998. See also the African Short Course version of the "Hands-on Document to Introduce GEMPACK, GTAP and RunGTAP" in GTAP's web site for more information about these experiments and how to use them to learn about RunGTAP and GEMPACK. **************************************************************************** I. SUMMARY This small version of GTAP uses a 3-good, 3-region aggregation. Four closures are provided, corresponding to different combinations of single/multi regional, general/partial equilibrium exogenous settings. The PE closures are with respect to non-food products (food price and output remain endogenous). The SR closures are with respect to the EU and ROW (income, prices and acitivity levels in the SSA remain fully endogenous). II. REGIONS AND COMMODITIES The regions are: SSA Sub-Sahara Africa, inclusive of South Africa EU European Union ROW Rest of the World The 3 goods are: food food and agriculture mnfcs resources and manufactures svces all services which are aggregated as follows: food: Paddy rice, Wheat, Cereal grains nec, Vegetables, fruit, nuts, Oil seeds, Sugar cane, sugar beet, Plant-based fibers, Crops nec, Bovine cattle, sheep and goats, horses, Animal products, Raw milk Wool silk-worm cocoons, Bovine cattle, sheep and goat, horse meat prods, Meat products nec, Vegetable oils and fats, Dairy products, Processed rice, Sugar, Food products nec, Beverages and tobacco products resources and manufactures: Forestry, Fishing, Coal, Oil, Gas, Minerals nec, Textiles, Wearing apparel, Leather products, Wood products, Paper products, publishing, Petroleum, coal products, Chemical, rubber, plastic products, Mineral products nec, Ferrous metals, Metals nec, Metal products, Motor vehicles and parts, Transport equipment nec, Electronic equipment, Machinery and equipment nec, Manufactures nec services: Electricity, Gas manufacture, distribution, Water, Construction Trade, transport, Financial, business, recreational services, Public admin and defence, education, health, Dwellings & Svces III. EXPERIMENT FILES: SHOCKS, CLOSURES AND SOLUTION METHOD- : SHOCKS The basic experiments in this version include: - numeraire shock - selected experiments from the Hands-on document - elimination of the import tariff on SSA food imported by the EU - elimination of all tariffs and export taxes/subsidies levied by the EU on trade with SSA CLOSURES Four different closures are explored here in the context of the fourth set of shocks above: Standard Multiregional GE closure Multi-regional partial equilibrium closure for food Single region Sub-Saharan Africa, general equilibrium closure Single region Sub-Saharan Africa, partial equilibrium closure for food SOLUTION METHODS Several experiments use the Johansen solution method -- for instructional purposes. However, the preferred solution method for policy analysis is Gragg 2-4-6 -- with automatic accuracy if large shocks are undertaken.
