"The export potential of South African edible nuts: the special case of macadamia nuts to Germany"
by Pisa, Noleen

Abstract
This paper’s main aim was to evaluate fifteen different nut product categories that correspond to SITC 0577 in order to determine the nut product with the highest export potential for South Africa. This was achieved by compiling a composite index. The composite index comprised three sub indices namely South Africa’s current export performance, world markets and production indices. Macadamia nuts were identified as the nut product category with the highest export potential. The second aim was to select a potential target market for macadamia nuts. Based on an analysis of market attractiveness indicators, Germany was selected as the target market for South African macadamia nuts. Lastly, to enhance the exports of South African macadamia nuts to Germany and to assist exporters of the identified product with market information needed to maximise exports, a market profile, outlining market characteristics and requirements for entry into the German market for South African macadamia nut exporters was developed.
