"Grazing to feedlots: an integrated multi-scale analysis of ABC+ in Brazil by 2030" by Zanetti De Lima, Cicero, Geraldo Martha, Zhan Wang and Jing Liu Abstract The ABC+ plan (Sectoral Plan for Climate Change Adaptation and Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture), released in 2021, seeks to make Brazilian agriculture more sustainable and resilient. In this second phase, the plan will continue to act as an instrument that promotes sustainable agriculture contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. This requires reinforcement of the strategies adopted from the original ABC Plan (2012-2020), which were focused on stimulating the adoption of Sustainable Production Systems, Practices, Products and Processes and based on technical and scientific innovation. This paper aims at enhancing ABC+’s impact on agricultural land expansion and crop production in Brazil, by answers research questions below: Considering the increased demand for feedstock impact on crop production, how would ABC+ goals influence land allocation in Brazil? What is the possible range of those impacts given uncertainties in future socioeconomic scenarios and policy? Will the ABC+ plan drive Brazil to be more intensive or extensive in land use, and what is its implication on environment and sustainability? To answer these questions, it is necessary to connect several drivers and crop production under a multi-scale framework, which can both take drivers from national and global level, and also reveal local feedback with spatial heterogeneity. Results from spatial level would enrich the understanding of ABC+ plan impacts on local hot spots and distribution and provide guidance for targeted policy-making, adaptation and mitigation. |
