"Natural and Social Capital in Labor Subsistent Households in Natural Resource Based Economies"
by Navarro, Gladys

Abstract
The household’s management of common property resources affects their labor supply decisions. Lewis et.al, (2003) argue that resource protection and resource-based activities can co-exists. Involving the local community in resource management in resource management are likely to yield positive results than merely reducing them as passive participant, i.e. resource restoration (Ruitenbeck et.al, 2007a).

Rosenberger (2001) argue that household’s decision to participate in community action depends on how individuals weigh their cost and benefits in joining the organization. The household’s economic security depends on the state of the natural resource. Individuals or households are rational agents and they have a clear notion of how their present action will influence the future flow of income (see Levine, 1995).

In this paper, keeping in mind the nature of subsistence households, the impact of a natural resource in its pristine state as a consequence of collective action, can reduce labor hours and increase marginal productivity of labor. The unobserved contribution of social capital to the marginal productivity of labor is measured in terms of household’s membership to the local collective action and their willingness to pay for the protection of the local common.
