"Assessing Africa’s Revealed Capabilities and Unlocking Potential Opportunities"
by Kassa, Woubet

Abstract
Countries in Africa have great potential to forge closer economic ties at the regional and
global level. To achieve this, understanding countries’ current production capabilities is important to identify potential opportunities for the future. This paper assesses the current export strengths of the African continent by regional economic communities (REC), and alternative country sub-groupings using traditional measures of competitiveness (namely Balassa (1965)’s revealed comparative advantage (RCA)) and network tools to characterize product relatedness. We then identify potential products and industries that provide opportunities for countries and RECs to specialize in, based on their current production capabilities.
