Conference Background
The goal of the conference is to promote the exchange of ideas among economists conducting quantitative analysis of global economic issues. Particular emphasis will be placed on applied general equilibrium methods, data, and application. Related theoretical and applied work is also welcome.

A global network of individuals and institutions conducting economy-wide analysis of trade, resource, and environmental policy issues has emerged. Thousands of these researchers now use a common data base, supplied by the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP). The project is coordinated by the Center for Global Trade Analysis at Purdue University with the support of a consortium of national and international agencies. The GTAP Data Base is a key input into most of the contemporary applied general equilibrium (AGE) analysis of global economic issues. Participants are given the opportunity to present their work, interact with other professionals in the field, and learn about the most recent developments in global economic analysis.

Conference Format
The conference is structured with the intent of maximizing discussion and the exchange of ideas among researchers. Most sessions involve the presentation of invited and/or contributed papers. On the basis of submitted abstracts, the Center for Global Trade Analysis selects papers eligible for presentation at the conference. Speakers will be asked to discuss the highlights and implications of their work with a dedicated amount of time also being devoted to questions and discussion.

Registration (Register Now!)
Registrations will be accepted from early January through April 30, 2014 (EST) with all payments due by May 7, 2014 (EST). Payments may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), wire transfer or bank check. All registrations received April 16-30 (EST) will be charged a late fee. Registration rates will be posted when registration formally opens in January.


Registration Rates
The standard and discounted registration fees include participation in all sessions, refreshments during the conference, ground transportation from the specified hotels, three lunches, two receptions and the conference program. The accompanying person registration fee covers the transportation and receptions only.

  • $320 (Standard rate)

  • $150 (Discounted rate for full-time students, current residents of Africa and developing country residents)
    • Discounted Student Rate
      In order to be eligible for the discounted student rate, registrants may be asked to provide proof of current academic status. The discounted rate is available only to full-time undergraduate and graduate students. Post-doctorates are not eligible for this rate.

    • Discounted Developing Country Resident Rate
      In order to be eligible for the discounted developing country resident rate, registrants must currently be residing in one of the countries listed on the "GTAP Developing Countries List" or currently be residing in Africa.

  • $70 (Accompanying person rate)
    • Accompanying Person Rate
      Those interested in registering an accompanying person, such as a spouse or partner, to attend the conference receptions or post-conference event must contact Ginger Batta (gbatta@purdue.edu) directly and provide the following information (Please note that colleagues/co-authors who will be attending conference sessions are NOT eligible for the accompanying person rate.):

  • $100 (Late registration fee)
    • All registrations received April 16-30 (EST) will be charged this late fee.

Scholarships
A number of scholarships will be available for presenters currently residing in Africa. Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on and following the review of their submitted abstract.


Updates/Cancellations
All changes and/or cancellations to registrations should be emailed directly to Ginger Batta (gbatta@purdue.edu). Registered participants who are unable to attend will receive an 85% refund until May 7, 2014. No refunds will be made after this date.


Post-Conference Event
The following event has been arranged for those wishing to further experience what the Dakar area has to offer.

Saturday, June 21 Goree Island - $60 Tour registration closed. Capacity reached.
Goree Island is the historic site on the West African coast where hundreds of thousands of captured men, women and children were rounded up in chains to be shipped to servitude in the New World. Goree Island is located in the center of the bay that forms the southern coast of the peninsula of Cape Verde. It is located 4 kilometers from Dakar or roughly 20 minutes by boat. In June, temperatures range between 25-30°C. Transportation (ground and boat) and lunch are included in the registration fee for this trip. All other expenses (shopping, etc.) are the responsibility of the participant. Individuals interested in participating in this event should indicate so on the conference registration form. Note that participation in this event is capped to the first 50 paying individuals.

Invitation Letters, Visas and Vaccination Requirements

By April 15, participants must send the details below to the IFPRI Dakar office via Mariama Ba (mariama.ba@cgiar.org) AND Alimatou Diop (alimatou.diop@cgiar.org) to begin processing invitation letters.

If complete information is provided, participants can expect to receive their invitation letter via email within 2-3 business days. It is unlikely that participants will be required to submit an original hard copy of the invitation letter during the visa application process; however, should this be required, mostly due to restrictions of nationality, participants should plan ahead and make their invitation letter request 2-3 months in advance of application.

Visas
Participants should apply for a visa for short stays in Senegal. To pre-enroll, please complete the biometric visa form at: http://www.visasenegal.sn/en/ The cost for pre-enrollment is ? 52,5. Note that during pre-enrollment, in addition to the standard personal and travel information, the following documents are required:

  • Copy of passport (first 5 pages)
  • Ticket reservation confirmation (airfare)
  • Hotel reservation confirmation

Once the pre-enrollment is complete, participants will be emailed a registration receipt. After enrollment, visas may be obtained at the nearest consulate/embassy or at the Dakar Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport. Upon arrival at the airport the traveler should go to the "Visa Airport" area where biometric information will be taken and the visa will be printed and affixed to the passport.

The following items are required at the airport. Please refer to Senegal's Visa Application Procedures as provided by the IFPRI Dakar staff or for more specific details for your citizenship, please reference the Travisa website at: http://www.travisa.com/. Under the "Get a Visa" tab, enter your specific information and then click the link to view the visa requirements specific to your situation.

  • The original registration receipt and approval email from the pre-enrollment
  • Passport valid for at least six months + a photocopy of the first five pages
  • Round-trip or onward ticket or proof of departure
  • Hotel confirmation
  • Invitation letter

Vaccination Requirements
A yellow fever vaccination is a requirement for entry into Senegal if coming from an infected area; however, all travelers should be vaccinated against yellow fever as a precaution. It is also recommended that travelers be vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B. Senegal is in the malarial zone and prophylactics should be taken as a precaution. Travelers should take measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as using an insect repellent at all times. Participants are responsible for securing their own lodging, which is on a first-come, first-served basis. The local organizers have secured reservation blocks at the following hotels, which are available through May 1, 2014. Participants should reference "Group Code: IFPRI" when making reservations.

Transportation
It is strongly recommended that participants use one of the following transportation options. Use of these options is included in the conference registration fee. The final transportation schedule will be posted in the conference program in mid-May.

  • To/From King Fahd Palace Hotel - The King Fahd Palace Hotel is located roughly 10 minutes' drive from the airport near the beach and the African Renaissance Monument in Dakar. The hotel offers a free shuttle service from the airport to the hotel. Hotel personnel will be waiting in the Elite Lounge of the airport to direct participants to the hotel shuttle.

  • To/From Fleur de Lys Hotel, Le Lodge des Almadies, Hotel des Almadies or Virage Hotel - A private bus service will be available to meet participants at the airport baggage claim (look for a GTAP sign) and deliver them to their respective hotels. The same bus service will be available on a daily basis to shuttle participants to/from these hotels and the conference venue (King Fahd Palace Hotel).

Currency Conversion
Senegal's official currency is the West African CFA Franc (XOF). For cash, Euros and Dollars are the most easily changed currency (1$ ~ 525 FCFA, 1? ~ 656 FCFA). Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and restaurants in Dakar and travelers' checks can be exchanged at most banks.


ATMs
The King Fahd Palace Hotel has ATMs of BICIS (BNP Paribas Group). Outside the hotel, roughly 500m away, there are also ATMs of UBA (United Bank of Africa), BOA (Bank of Africa) and SGBS (Senegalese subsidiary of Societe Generale).
