Biography
Dr. Marein van Schaaijk (born 1947 in The Netherlands) is the director of Micromacro Consultants. This bureau has carried out macro model (including poverty module) building projects, in Indonesia, Kenya, Poland, Curaçao, Suriname, Ethiopia, Macedonia and Zambia. Furthermore it does macro and micro economic research in The Netherlands. See www.micromacroconsultants.com

He is a specialist in macroeconomics, quantitative microeconomic analysis, economic model building, poverty analysis and national accounting. After his studies, he worked for three years in Surinam (South America) to train statisticians and to set up the Surinam National Accounts and other basic statistics. Afterwards he worked for 18 years for the Central Planning Bureau of the Netherlands in several research and management positions (regional planning, micro-economic analysis of household income, labor and housing market, energy and the national budget). Then he combined this experience of quantitative analysis of a market economy with his knowledge of Suriname data and institutions to construct a micro-macro model of Surinam. He trained Suriname economists in macro-economic modeling and in using macro-economic models to build scenarios for structural adjustment.

In 1994 he left government service to start Micromacro Consultants. Together with a small full time staff and a network of 23 highly experienced short term advisers, this bureau has performed micro and macroeconomic research for the Ministries of Housing, Health, Internal Affairs, Economics and Finance in the Netherlands and also for private organizations. The Bureau also successfully organized projects in model building and training in Indonesia, Kenya, Poland, Curaçao, Suriname, Ethiopia, Macedonia and Zambia.
Dr. van Schaaijk holds a Ph.D. in macroeconomics from the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and a Masters (cum laude) in economics from the University of Tilburg. He published many books and articles about economics and built Macroabc, a macro model including poverty module Micromacrosim, available as shareware on the internet: www.micromacroconsultants.com.
