"Comparison of different updating methods for the GTAP data base"
by Manrique-de-Lara-Peñate, Casiano

Abstract
Our paper deals with the comparison of different procedures for the updating and adjusting of Social Accounting Matrices. Most of the previous work has either concentrated on a particular country or on artificially generated SAMs, using Monte Carlo or other simulation procedures. We do not know about any wider effort of evaluation of different updating methods. Using the GTAP database for versions 5 and 6 we will make a comparison of the different updating methods for the highest number of countries. Using the information given by tha GTAP version 5.5 we will try to estimate the SAMs elaborated using GTAP database version 6. For this purpose we will use the procedure to generate SAMs from the GTAP database proposed in Technical Paper nº 22 (DEC 04) by MacDonald and Thierfelder.

If possible we will start trying to identify the elements of these SAMs that we can identify as “important” for this updating process. The identification of these “important” coefficients may help identify the need to concentrate efforts in certain elements of the GTAP database elaboration process.
