"Technical Progress, Technical Efficiency Change and Total Factor Productivity Growth in the Indian Manufacturing Industry – Implications for Sustainable Future Growth"
by Palaniswamy, Sivakumar

Abstract
The study analyzes the performance of registered manufacturing industries in India in terms of TFPG, technical progress, economies of scale and technical efficiency by employing stochastic frontier production function. Total of 61 three-digit industries under the NIC-1998 classification are considered for this study. Data on value added, fixed capital, number of workers, depreciation, raw materials and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for different industries were collected from Annual Survey of Industries for the period from 1973-74 to 2005-06. Determinants of TFPG and technical efficiency has been analyzed by employing data on skills, size of the industry, output growth, export intensity, nominal rate of protection, quantitative restriction, foreign investment, capital intensity and R&D. Since, the data for many variables such as capital stock, skills, and export intensity were not directly available, different procedures are employed to calculate these indicators.

The preliminary finding shows that there is decreasing trend in total factor productivity growth in most of the industries. The estimated results of technical efficiency reveals the existence of decreasing trend in electrical, food, transport, basic metal, paper and beverages. Further, the findings reveal that the capital intensive industries exhibits decreasing trend in their return to scale and technical progress. Also, it is found that reform policies could not make any significant impact on increasing technical efficiency levels for most of the industries except textiles and electrical industries.
