"Assessing the Impact of the Arab Economic Integration" by Bchir, Mohamed Hedi Abstract Since the Arab spring, most of the Arab countries are facing strong economic difficulties. Libya, Egypt and Tunisia could register negative growth rates in 2011 and the situation in 2012 is not very clear as most of these economies are facing private investment dwindle, unemployment rise. While new governments have a temptation to adopt populist policies. The Arab spring coincide also with a serious economic crisis that is heating the region’s main partners (UE and USA). Countries like Tunisia and Egypt could not account on their classic partners to accelerate their exports and re-build their economy. Within this context, Arab integration can be seen as one alternative engine of growth and employment. This could be true as the Arab region is one of the less integrated regions in the world. Intraregional trade is, indeed, below its potential and accounts for less than 11% of total Arab trade. Regional production chains are close to inexistent while transaction and transport cost are particularly high. This study will be a first CGE assessment of the economic impact of such a policy. Using the new data available in the new version of GTAP, it will carry out a sample of simulations using an amended version of Mirage that models unemployment mechanisms. ... |
