"Monitoring Regional Demand and Productivity Change in Egypt’s Food Processing Industries"
by Bahloul, Ahmed Qadry and Wilbur Maki

Abstract
In this paper we present an overview on monitoring changes in the underlying factorsaffecting Egypt’s food processing industries and the impacts of these changes on the incomesof households and businesses. We address these tasks under the following topical headings:

Targeting national concerns, monitoring industry activity, and facilitating product adjustments. The targeted national concerns include finding new and expanding markets for Egypt’s processed food products, achieving higher productivity of resource use in food processing, growing a region’s economic base, and, finally, building regional databases and modeling capabilities to address these concerns. The monitoring of industry activity focuses on key economic indicators, namely, output and employment, value added and resident incomes, exports and economic base, and industry multipliers and impact analysis.

Facilitating product adjustments depends on predicting local impacts, identifying resource gaps, and supporting learning opportunities. We come full circle to national concerns cited earlier as we identify and seek various measures to correct product supply imbalances in Egypt’s food processing industries and, also, provide opportunities for local and regional residents to benefit from market and productivity changes
