"Assessing the impacts of Non-Tariff Barriers in the African Continental Free Trade Area" by Leudjou Njiteu, Rostant Roland Abstract Like tariffs, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) involves non-tariff barriers (NTBs) whose effects are not known. The lack of in-depth studies is justified, until recent years, by a lack of reliable data and techniques for quantifying NTBs based on trade theory. In order to prepare the states for the NTB negotiations under the AfCFTA, this project aims to analyze the impact of the reduction of NTBs on GDP, trade and welfare gains. This project will capitalize on recent advances in NTB data collection. It will use data from the Global Trade Alerts (GTA) database, which is currently the most comprehensive with the most significant number of African countries. First, using the gravity model, we will estimate the impact of NTBs on bilateral trade in 6-digit disaggregated products. Second, we will use the coefficients of the estimates to calculate the ad valorem equivalents (AVEs) of the NTBs associated with the formation of the AfCFTA. Third, we will use AVEs in a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) Model to quantify the responses related to GDP, trade, and welfare gains. Keywords: AfCFTA, NBTs, AVEs, Gravity Model, CGE Model |
