"Projected Impacts on Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Changes in Chinese Diet"
by Jacobs, Henry

Abstract
This paper examines the environmental and economic effects in 2030 of China’s national dietary guidelines, which attracted media attention in 2016 for their potential to significantly reduce that country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by curbing demand for meat. This analysis uses the GTAP CGE model and GTAP carbon and non-carbon GHG emissions databases to project the global economy and its GHG emissions to 2030 under a baseline scenario and a scenario in which China fully implements its national dietary guidelines. Environmental and economic effects of the dietary guidelines are estimated as the differences between these two projected scenarios. According to the results of the analysis, China’s national dietary guidelines have a negligible impact on GHG emissions in 2030.
