"Impact of Non-Tariff Measures on ASEAN Trade: A Panel Data Approach" by Puangchit, Pattawee Abstract The study examines the influence of Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) on trade dynamics within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) following the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. NTMs, including sanitary and phytosanitary regulations and technical barriers to trade, have become more prominent as tariff barriers have been reduced by the AEC. These measures are complex and vary widely, posing both opportunities and challenges for trade in the region. This research is driven by the need to explore the complex impacts of NTMs across ASEAN's varied economic environments. Previous studies have recognized the importance of NTMs in trade but are often limited by the use of cross-sectional data and lack a detailed focus on sector-specific effects. This study addresses these limitations by using panel data from 2015 to 2020, covering all ten ASEAN member countries, and applying a gravity model to perform a detailed sectoral analysis with the GTAP 11 database. The analysis aims to quantify the economic impacts of NTMs across 65 sectors, providing insights into their differential effects given the diverse roles of ASEAN countries as exporters and importers. By using panel data, the study enhances its robustness, controls for time-invariant factors, and addresses endogeneity concerns. The findings are essential for understanding the uneven influence of NTMs and supporting policy dialogue in ASEAN on managing these measures effectively to support regional economic integration. The research offers valuable insights into the varied impacts of NTMs, highlighting their significant role in shaping international trade within the ASEAN framework. |
