"Connecting the Transition towards Renewable Energy with Wellbeing: A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis of Spain" by Angermayr, Gianna Laura and Ruth Delzeit Abstract In response to global challenges like climate change and worsening resource scarcity, the fourth energy transition towards renewable energy is presented as a promising strategy to decarbonize the economy. Nevertheless, the transition hides several potential trade-offs, such as land-use change, water stress, increased material-use, and an unequal distribution of challenges and opportunities. This study investigates the sustainability and wellbeing trade-offs associated with Spain’s energy transition towards carbon neutrality by 2050, given its vulnerability to climate change and its ambitious decarbonization strategy that relies on the Strategic Framework for Energy and Climate. Using a Computable General Equilibrium model, this study evaluates the economy-wide repercussions of energy policies, integrating environmental, social, and economic indicators to better understand their multidimensional impacts. In line with Spain’s net-zero target by 2050 and its objectives to responsibly manage scarce resources, this study also introduces environmental limits on water use and biodiversity conservation while also addressing the rebound effect of energy efficiency improvements. |
