"Analysing the potential of secondary aluminium in achieving decarbonisation of the global aluminium industry"
by Ma, Zijie, Alvaro Calzadilla and Matthew Winning

Abstract
Achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement requires emission reductions across all sectors. The aluminium (Al) industry, as a traditionally high energy- and emission-intensive sector, faces the dual challenge of meeting growing global material demand while pursuing deep decarbonisation. Secondary Al production can reduce energy use and CO2 emissions by over 90% compared to primary production, yet its role remains underexplored.

This study investigates the decarbonisation potential of secondary Al through an integrated assessment approach. We first constructed material flow analysis (MFA) models for 10 world regions covering Al stocks and flows from 1970 to 2017. We then updated the Environmental Global Applied General Equilibrium (ENGAGE) model by disaggregating the Al supply chain—including bauxite mining, primary production, secondary production, and recycling—based on the GTAP 11 database. By hard-linking regional MFAs with the ENGAGE model, we assessed the environmental and economic impacts of circular economy strategies under different policy scenarios from 2018 to 2050.

Key findings reveal that production taxes can reduce primary Al output while enhancing the market competitiveness of secondary Al. Extending product lifetimes can decrease Al demand and cut CO2 emissions by up to 71%. Increasing recycling rates across regions to theoretical maximums could reduce bauxite inputs by 40% and achieve a 72% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050.

This research highlights the crucial role of secondary Al in decarbonising the global Al industry and offers insights to support regional and global circular economy policymaking.
