"Chapter 14A: Value Added - Primary Factor Shares"
by Baldos, Uris Lantz, Wajiha Saeed, Thomas Hertel and Keith Fuglie

Abstract
Primary factor shares (land, labor, and capital) in agricultural value- added in the GTAP database are based on a core set of estimated shares obtained from the literature. But these cost shares are volatile and input-output tables frequently do not provide a three-way split of value-added (typically, only returns to labor are reported). As a result, it is challenging but necessary to revise the underlying shares in the GTAP database when more recent estimates become available.
In version 11 of GTAP database, substantial changes in agricultural primary factor shares were made in several regions building on the compiled estimates by Keith Fuglie. This chapter revisits the data and methods used to update cost shares in version 11 which are also adopted for version 12 of the GTAP database. Moreover, to ensure consistency with the GTAP land use and land cover database (LULC) (Lee et al. 2005; Avetisyan, Baldos, and Hertel 2011; Baldos and Corong 2025), version 12 now adopts the land rent reallocation procedure used in this database. This procedure moves land payments for crops, forestry, and nonruminant livestock sectors prior to disaggregation of land rents across agroecological zones - a departure from previous GTAP database versions. A description of the land rent allocation procedure is covered at the end of this chapter.
