"The application of trade and growth theories to agriculture: A survey"
by van Berkum, Siemen and Hans van Meijl

Abstract
This article reviews a broad range of theoretical concepts available to explain international trade in agricultural and food products. Most agricultural trade analyses concentrate on basic agricultural commodities and rest on traditional perceptions of comparative advantage, based on neoclassical theory. Observations of agricultural trade suggest, however, that concepts from modern trade and growth theories are increasingly relevant. This survey demonstrates, that the latest insights from trade and growth theories are still employed infrequently in agricultural trade analyses.
