"The Impacts of the opening of the Foreign Direct Investment in China on the Asia-Pacific Region"
by Nai-Fong, Kuo

Abstract
This paper explores the potential impacts of the opening of the foreign direct investment (FDI) in China on cross-strait and Asia-Pacific regional economies. We first identified the determinants and evaluated the elasticities of FDI in China from 1977 to 1997. Based on these results, we then used Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) model to simulate the effects of capital flows if the restrictions of FDI are liberalized in 1998. The results indicate that the opening of the FDI in China will increase mutual economic and trade dependence with Taiwan. Furthermore, it also has significant effects on the manufacturing, electronic, and service industries in Taiwan and China. Finally, there will have more negative effects on South Korea and Vietnam in terms of GDP and terms of trade.
