"SAM for Egypt: Measuring Employment and Income Impacts of Changing Markets for Egypt’s Food Processing Industries"
by Bahloul, Ahmed Qadry and Wilbur Maki

Abstract
Work objectives of the SAM for Egypt are summarized in a series of
steps that culminate in a Social Accounting Modeling system to measure the employment and income impacts of changing markets for Egypt’s food processing industries. This paper is about the process of building an IMPLAN SAM modeling system for Egypt, in this case, with a focus on the food processing industry. The food processing industry links Egypt’s agricultural economy to its local, regional, and global markets.

The paper starts - following a statement of study objectives and
identification of study regions - with a review of Egypt’s current input-output data systems. The next step is adapting national economic data to the IMPLAN SAM model requirements. This step includes preparing national and regional economic accounts, constructing national and regional IMPLAN SAM models, preparing IMPLAN SAM reports, and predicting national and regional economic impacts of changes in the regional and foreign market outlets and demand for processed food products. Additional steps involve the validating of the national and regional model findings and the organizing of local and regional information meetings focusing on model findings and related issues.
