"Fall in hydrocarbon and cement prices in Niger: What impact on employment and the well-being of men and women?" by Alkassoum Sangare, Saadatou, Andrea El Meligi and Victor Nechifor Abstract The economic and social reforms initiated in 2023 by the political authorities aim to support the resilience of populations but may also have repercussions on gender inequalities, which remain high in Niger. This study uses a computable general equilibrium model to assess the distributional impacts between men and women of the petroleum products reform and the cement reform under various budget balance financing assumptions. The results highlight an improvement in household income and an increase in their purchasing power, but the pressure on public finances, persistent social disparities, and the risks of dependence on subsidies reveal the need for strategic adjustment. |
