"Farmer welfare and gendered time use implications of a large-scale transition to cocoa agroforestry in Ghana: A local economy-wide general equilibrium assessment"
by Amankwah, Esther and Arndt Feuerbacher

Abstract
Ghana’s cocoa sector faces intensifying pressure to reduce deforestation while sustaining rural livelihoods. Cocoa agroforestry (CAF) is promoted as a climate-adaptive, biodiversity-friendly production system that can maintain or raise yields at moderate shade levels and improve incomes, yet adoption remains limited. Existing economic evidence is dominated by plot-level profitability and yield assessments and largely overlooks economy-wide feedbacks, seasonal labour constraints, and gendered time-use burdens that can shape adoption incentives and welfare outcomes. This study develops a Local Economy-Wide Impact Evaluation (LEWIE) computable general equilibrium model for Ghana’s Western North Region to quantify direct and spillover effects of a large-scale CAF transition through linked product, land, and labour markets. The model is calibrated to a regional, household-survey-based meta–Social Accounting Matrix with household-specific activity, commodity, and factor accounts, and explicitly represents main and light cocoa seasons with gender-disaggregated labour allocation. Counterfactual simulations compare a baseline with: (S1) a large-scale transition in which CAF occupies 90% of cocoa land; (S2) S1 plus a stylised gender-responsive labour-saving package; and (S3) S1 under land-conversion constraints to test rebound risks. We expect seasonal wage responses and gendered time reallocation to be central determinants of welfare incidence and policy trade-offs.
