Biography
Curriculum Vitae - Elena Ianchovichina

Elena Ianchovichina has been lead economist in the Chief Economist Office of the World Bank’s Middle East and North Africa region since January 2010. She works primarily on economic growth, international trade, and inclusion issues in developing countries. In her current position, on many occasions, she has acted as the chief economist for the region and has led several influential regional reports. Prior to that she was senior economist (2005-10) and economist (2001-05) in the World Bank’s economic policy and debt department, young professional in the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific region and the World Bank’s research department (2000-01), and assistant professor at Kansas State University (1999-2000). She initiated and managed the program on inclusive growth in the World Bank's economic policy and debt department and co-authored several inclusive growth diagnostic studies that served as prototypes for the World Bank's systematic country diagnostics. An author of more than 60 publications, her work has been published in top development economics journals and has been cited in leading newspapers and other media outlets. In 2008, she received Purdue University’s Apex Award for outstanding contributions to quantitative economic analysis and her assessment of the economic effects of China's WTO accession. Ianchovichina is a native of Bulgaria and has a PhD from Purdue University.
